The VESA Mounted PC: Lean and Green
Written by Ben Hall

VMPCVIA’s just announced an innovative new product, which, though not geared for the green PC space, has some very green qualities. The VESA Mounted PC was designed originally to offer a more cost effective alternative to panel PCs, with the combined cost of a vmpc and a standard monitor being less than that of a regular panel PC. But with its size, space saving features, fanless configuration, and ultra low voltage processor, it’s certainly an asset to the green computing drive.

Check out the video Stew from Technovoyance has made explaining just how this new PC works:

VESA stands for Video and Electronics Standards Association, and the standard here dictates that all monitors have four screw holes on the back, exactly 10cm x 10cm apart. These screw holes are usually provided as a means of attaching the monitor to a wall, stand or articulated arm, but someone at VIA had the novel idea to attach a PC to the reverse side of the monitor using those same mounting holes.

The VESA comes in two SKUs; a VIA C7 1.0 GHz version, featured in the video, and a VIA Eden ULV (Ultra Low Voltage) 1.5 GHz version. Neither version uses fans, so we are talking about a really quiet, durable and solid piece of hardware.

Aimed at the digital signage market - airports, train stations, advertising and kiosks etc - the vm7700 is a discreet PC that can be used in any situation where space management is key, though all you need to do is attach it to the monitor and in seconds you have a full x86 PC that hides very nicely out of view.
