Yesterday saw the launch of national eDay in New Zealand. With electronic waste the fastest growing type of rubbish in the world, eDay is designed to give people a chance to dispose of old computer equipment and cell phones in an environmentally friendly way.
With an estimated quarter of a million obsolete computers in New Zealand homes, eDay is scheduled to run in 12 locations across the country on the weekend of 29 to 30 September, and build upon a pilot scheme run by Dell in Wellington last year, which saw 54 tonnes of old home computer equipment off-loaded.
eDay aims to increase community awareness of the hazardous nature of electronic equipment, making it clear that disposal in landfills is not a sustainable option. It also provides a drive-through recycling mechanism and convenient drop-off points for households and community organisations to dispose of computer equipment and mobile phones.
