Greenpeace tests CeBIT’s green claims

Greenpeace company rankings

Following on from yesterday’s story on CeBIT 2008, it seems that Greenpeace have been checking out this year’s green themed show and are not particularly impressed.

Well, perhaps that’s a bit of an overstatement; they applaud the fact that more and more companies are taking the environmental impact of their products seriously, but add however, that there’s “still a long way to go.”

Greenpeace was present at the fair in a bid to sort the "greenwash" from the genuine. The group tested 37 products from 14 major electronics brands and awarded them points based on criteria such as the substitution of hazardous substances, energy efficiency and recyclability.

It said that Sony's Vaio TZ11 notebook, the Sony Ericsson T650i mobile phone and the Sony Ericsson P1i PDA came out on top in the survey, although these products scored just over half of the possible 100 points available.

Several firms declined to provide Greenpeace with data or failed to do so in time or sufficiently, including Apple, Microsoft, Nintendo and Palm, it said.
