Can you build the world's greenest computer?

IT designFor all you aspiring designers out there, this past weekend Dell announced a competition to design the world's greenest computer, and to lay the groundwork for environmentally responsible computing around the world. Dubbed ReGeneration, the competition invites participants to rethink what defines a truly environmentally responsible computing technology product. Dell hopes to refresh awareness (I didn’t realize it was stale; in fact green computing is just about as ‘fresh’ as an issue can be. Anyway…), and explore new directions in sustainable, environmentally responsible product designs for computing.

The competition is open to everyone, with prizes ranging from $10,000 for selected finalists to $15,000 plus a matching $15,000 for a winning student and his or her university.

“The spirit of this competition, therefore, is to invigorate the academic and industry dialogue regarding product designs for environmentally responsible green computing. We want to flush out any standing contradictions that may exist to more fully understand tradeoffs and prioritizations for green computing product design and then share that understanding for the benefit of all.”

So, if you think you’ve got an idea that’s green, computing-related, and you’d like to share, check out the official rules and have a go.
